Punteggio 16.5/20 · Da bere 2027-2037, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Jan 2024

Tasted blind. Very dark. Fragrant black fruit with cassis-leaf lift. Slightly thick but very smooth tannins, highly polished but perhaps slightly lacking freshness on the finish, which is firm and chewy. Nevertheless, a reasonably harmonious whole. (JH)

The 2020 Grand Mayne has an earthy, savory nose, a bit more rustic than its peers, with black truffle and antique bureau infusing the black fruit. There is plenty of charm and character here. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Well balanced, smooth and harmonious, this gains weight toward the finish and musters commendable refinement that tempts you back for another sip. A classy Saint-Émilion. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

I loved the 2020 Château Grand Mayne. This medium to full-bodied, concentrated, incredibly satisfying Saint-Emilion offers up ample mulled red and black fruits, some loamy earth, iron, and dried flower nuances, ripe tannins, and plenty of mid-palate depth. I still think the 2015 is the top vintage, but this is clearly in the same league as the 2015, 2018, and 2019, and it's going to drink brilliantly over the coming 15-20 years.
