Tasted blind. Very dark crimson. Smoky, oaky nose with a touch of reduction? Peppery spice and a little leafy in its black fruit. Really leafy Cabernet Franc style on the palate. Firm, chewy tannin texture. Lots of freshness and energy but the nose was a bit off-putting at this stage. (JH)

The 2020 Alcée has a ripe blackberry- and briar-scented nose with crushed iris flower coming through, though it is not as complex as its peers. The palate is ripe and powerful with dense weight. It feels a bit labored toward the finish, something that I did not observe hitherto, hence the lower score. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Alcée offers up notes of cherry, cassis, violet and dark berries, it’s medium to full-bodied, broad and supple, with terrific concentration allied with racy acids.
A very floral and beautiful wine with salt and iron. It’s medium-bodied with firm tannins and a iron-like finish. Drink after 2025.
