FINE+RARE, Apr 2021

This is savoury and slightly reductive at first. With air, the nose offers much more – with a little aniseed twist and lift of raspberry fruit, then the palate follows with a crushed-rock freshness, purity of pristine blackcurrant and a wave of vibrant red berry fruit. Precise and pure, the tannins are firm and structured, offering a real grip around the mouth. The finish sees another wave of dark fruit wash over the palate before turning savoury with an earthy barnyard complexity.

The 2020 Giscours has a fabulous bouquet. It's very complex and well-defined, with blackberry, bilberry and hints of blueberry and violets. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and fine grip, quite edgy and tensile. Lightly spiced with a precise and persistent finish, this is a seriously impressive follow-up to the '19 that will vie for supremacy.

Deep plum in colour, lilting acidities, some angular tannins at this point, beautifully bitter dark chocolate alongside bilberry and blackberry fruits, with fragrant mint leaf and precisely carved tannic grip. Last year with Lorenzo Pasquini as technical director, before Jérôme Poisson took over in 2021. The first year also when Giscours became the only estate in Margaux owned by the Albada family, as they sold du Tertre. Thomas Duclos consultant, 50% new oak. Harvest September 8 to October 2, 35hl/h yield.

Tasted blind. Black core with purplish rim. Dark and savoury, slightly charry, on the nose. Masses of pure black fruit. Sweeter in the mouth, a bit sweet-sour, flowingly gentle on the palate and scented. Gentle and fragrant at the same time. (JH)
