Revisited a year later, Lachaux's 2018 Vosne-Romanée Hautes-Maizières is showing very well, unfurling in the glass with notes of sweet wild berries, peonies, blood orange, raw cocoa, Indian spices and sassafras. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's layered and lively, with an ample core of fruit and powdery structuring tannins. Youthfully reserved today, this will really begin to unfurl with five or six years in bottle.

0.6 ha downslope from Échezeaux and just south of the Clos de Vougeot. Iron-rich soil. 100% whole bunch. Lightish cherry red. More intensely aromatic than the Nuits-St-Georges Les Poisets and more savoury, almost smoky – but not at all reductive. Stemmy herbal notes but also darker-fruited. Appetising and savoury. Firmer and more savoury on the palate too. Incredibly supple and delicate. Almost too smooth and finishes shorter than some. Subtle but fades a little on the finish? (JH)
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Hautes Maizières has a very pure, generous bouquet of wild strawberry, Dorset plum and pressed rose petal aromas, all wonderfully defined, especially for a Village Cru. The palate is medium-bodied with quite sharp tannins, and more citric than the other cuvées. There is a pleasant piquancy on the finish. Excellent.
