The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques is beautiful, bursting with aromas of plums and wild berries mingled with peonies, orange rind, rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety, it's layered and perfumed, with bright acids, beautifully refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, matured in two-thirds new oak and 50% whole bunch, was more reduced than the Champeaux when I tasted it from barrel. There appears to be a higher proportion of red fruit on the nose here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and slightly grainy in texture, offering clementine and marmalade-infused black cherry and wild strawberry fruit. Tangy and full of energy on the finish. This is another great Premier Cru from Loïc Dugat-Py.
2019 was the second vintage with Leroy-style high, long-shooted training. So perfect in hot summers. Used to be picked last, but they are careful not to pick too late. Cask sample. Smells very rich, not at all as though it comes from anywhere cool! Dark and mysterious. Approachable and dense without being heavy. Very majestic. Just a hint of treacle and lots of freshness. (JR)
