Impressive spectrum of brooding red and black fruit (red plum, cassis) aromas, beautifully integrated fired earth, savoury ferrous notes and lifted clove pepper notes – complex nose. Lovely close-knit texture to the wine. The tannins are abundant, dense but fully resolved, extremely fine, fully integrated and providing directional focus on the palate. Exceptional tannin framework. Fruit clarity of redcurrant, red plum, blueberry compote (no rasining of fruit), interspersed with dried tobacco and earthy notes. Texture is deceptively supple considering the structure. Excellent long-aging potential considering the wealth of tannins and overall balance.

The 2019 L'Enclos Tourmaline comes across just a little stilted on the nose, though it coheres with aeration. A very slight menthol note emerges from the background. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, fleshy but with a rather over-extracted finish, rendering it rather monotone vis-a-vis its peers. This tasted so much better last year - I will seek to revisit this Pomerol. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

The 2019 Enclos Tourmaline is a tiny production Pomerol coming from a one-hectare vineyard beside Clinet. It's a rich, powerful, yet incredibly elegant Pomerol that does everything right, offering beautiful cassis and darker cherry fruits, notes of cedarwood, spicy oak, and chocolate, full-bodied richness, silky tannins, and a great finish. It marries opulence with finesse perfectly and is one heck of an impressive Pomerol that can be drunk any time over the coming 25 years or so. Pomerol was one of the standout appellations in 2019, and this shows it.

Enclos Tourmaline is a single one-hectare plot situated on the Pomerol plateau next to Château Clinet and Château Feytit-Clinet. Before being bought by Peter Kwok in 2012, the vineyard was part of the Château La Patache property.
