FINE+RARE Tasting Note, Jun 2020

Jammy cassis and riper plum fruit, surprising density and weight on the mid palate yet remains medium bodied and fairly open-knit. Tannins very silky, supple but provide balanced framework on the palate. Subtlety of the tannins brings refreshing lift on a slightly warming finish. Well balanced and well integrated.

The 2019 Siran has a classically-styled, reassuringly precise and focused bouquet with plenty of mineralité and tension. The oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine precision and balance, still a bit of oak to be soaked up here but it will with time. Wonderful focus and boasting greater persistence than its peers, this Margaux is firing on all cylinders. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Tasted blind. Much deeper, darker crimson than most. Flashier than most Margaux. Not so typical. Lots of extraction – sort of halfway to a St-Émilion. Tough tannins on the end. A long-term bet that others liked more than me. (JR)

One of the finest vintages I've tasted from this château, the 2019 Château Siran has a great bouquet of ripe black cherries, blackberries, scorched earth, leather, and cedary herbs. With medium to full-bodied richness, polished tannins, and outstanding overall balance, it's going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and drink nicely over the following 10-15 years. It's an impressive Margaux.

In the south of Margaux, this property has 36 hectares of vines. There’s an unusually large proportion of Petit Verdot (13%) in the vineyard, something which the team feels adds finesse, concentration and a spicy finish to the wine.
