The team at Berliquet was able to age the 2019 entirely in their own choice of barrels, across four different coopers. As at Canon, the team want the oak to bring greater structure and length to the wine, without taking anything away from the precision of the fruit. The estate also trialled two amphorae for the first time in the cellar. The nose is rich and intense with notes of sweet black fruit that gently unfurl in the glass. Like the 2018, the palate has a wonderful earthy character coupled with just a hint herbal freshness that runs through to the finish. The tannic framework is excellent, firm but moderate. Blend: 77% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc

The 2019 Berliquet has a delineated and focused bouquet with attractive blackberry, wild strawberry and violet scents, the new oak is neatly assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, fine acidity, perhaps without quite the charm of the aromatics, cohesive with a silky smooth finish. Stylish, but it needs more complexity. (NM)
A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Berliquet is deep garnet-purple in color. It storms out with powerful notions of baked blackberries and stewed plums, leading to suggestions of cedar, sassafras, truffles, and chocolate. The medium to full-bodied palate has compelling freshness, with soft tannins and a long, layered finish.
Tasted blind. Mid crimson. Pale rim. Just a bit dead on the mid palate. Solid but not exciting. Still very youthful with the acid and tannin dominating the fruit at present. (JR)

The Chanel group – owners of Ch. Rauzan-Ségla and Ch. Canon – added Berliquet to their stable of wine estates in 2017. Since then, the team – led by Nicolas Audebert – has been transforming the property, gradually revealing this special Saint-Emilion site’s potential.
