FINE+RARE Tasting Note, Jun 2020

Deep purple colour, brooding savoury nose, underbrush, saddle leather, mushroom. Expansive tannins, moderate in structure, a touch angular providing structure and freshness. Touch of rusticity, old school profile but tannins ripe and resolved.

The 2019 Giscours has been a little variable from bottle to bottle. This is definitely one of the better ones: more defined and mineral-driven than the '18, with blackberry, wild strawberry and cedar unfolding on the nose. The oak is neatly integrated. Very poised, the palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, lightly spiced with white pepper and Provençal herbs on the finish. This has a lot of potential.

Another reminder of just how balanced and delicious the 2019 vintage is in Bordeaux. Hits the graphite, slate and raspberry leaf notes that bring you firmly into Cabernet Sauvignon territory, with its dark but bright cassis and blackberry fruits, with savoury sage and spiced clove on the finish. Lorenzo Pasquini technical director, first vintage with Thomas Duclos as consultant, harvest September 11 to October 12, 44hl/ha yield, 50% new oak for ageing.

The 2019 Giscours has a well-defined, quite tertiary nose, very precise and minerally, detailed and effortless. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fresh on the entry, quite edgy with a lively, almost citrus-fresh finish that urges you to take another sip. Maybe not the substance for long-term cellaring, but delicious. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.
