The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a tightly wound, intense bouquet of black fruit, briar, crushed limestone and a brushing of chalk dust. The palate is medium-bodied with hints of licorice and menthol on the entry. Quite an exotic Echézeaux, more so than the 2019, it has great breadth and grip toward the finish. This will require several years in bottle.

The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru comes from two parcels in Les Quartier de Nuits and Les Rouges du Bas and is the only cru that includes whole cluster (20%) and is matured in 60% new oak. It has a very well-defined bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, sous-bois and a touch of pepperiness emanating from the stems. The palate is medium-bodied with gorgeous, lithe tannins, a fine bead of acidity and quite a dense, grippy finish that suggests it will need several years in bottle. Excellent.
Moderately discreet but not invisible wood frames ripe and wonderfully spicy, fresh and layered aromas of both red and dark currant along with notes of hoisin and mocha. There is once again excellent volume and richness to the concentrated medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sap on the dusty, serious and lengthy finish that displays really lovely balance. Patience though once again is strongly advised.
The 2018 Echezeaux Grand Cru soars from the glass with a pretty bouquet of cherries, raspberries, smoked duck, cinnamon and rose petals that's framed by a deft touch of new oak and also subtly inflected by the 15% whole clusters that this cuvée saw this year. On the palate, it's full-bodied, velvety and succulent, with an expansive attack, excellent depth at the core and a long, nicely defined finish.
