The 2018 La Grande Rue "Cuvée 1959" Grand Cru, which debuted with the 2014 vintage, comes from a parcel that was originally exchanged with Domaine de la Romanée-Conti that year to complete the two monopoles, the vines having been replanted in 1932. It has an intense, mineral-driven bouquet that is beautifully defined, evoking red cherries, wild strawberry and clementines in an antique glass bowl and touches of wild honey in the background; quite distinctive compared to the regular cuvée. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a lovely seam of acidity. Builds nicely toward a beautifully structured, detailed, persistent finish that distinguishes it from the regular cuvée. Just two barrels produced.

The pliant medium-bodied flavors once again possess a decidedly sleek mouthfeel though the tension really builds from the mid-palate to the firm, dusty and very serious finish that offers outstanding length. Patience strongly advised as this is definitely resolutely structured.
