The 2017 Bourgogne Aligoté Auvonnes Au Pépé comes from Sylvain Pataille’s grandfather’s vines, planted in 1961. It has a captivating floral bouquet, lilac and wild heather scents permeating the citrus fruit and hints of white peach emerging with aeration. The palate is vibrant, energetic and quite tangy in the mouth, offering marmalade and quince notes and a penetrating saline finish that encourages another sip. This comes highly recommended.

Laurent called this Les Auvones au Pépé because the vines belonged to their grandfather. Between Marsannay and Couchey. Dry and well-drained in the summer but the clay-limestone subsoils give more strict and reductive wines. Planted 1952. No new oak here but the struck match is to the fore in a delicious way, although apparently it's the site not the winemaking. So incredibly intense and deep, with that tense acid line and still the deep richness of old vines. Incredibly long with a salty fresh aftertaste that goes on for ever. I can’t put another wine in my mouth without a pause. (JH)
