Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2024-2032, Josh Raynolds, Dec 2019

Deep brilliant crimson. Spice-accented aromas of red fruit liqueur, candied flowers and peach (!) are sharpened by a minerally nuance. Silky and gently sweet, offering sappy raspberry, cherry and floral pastille flavors that become more energetic with air. In a juicy, elegant style, with a refreshing jolt of minerality adding focus to the long, subtly tannic finish. All concrete.

Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2019-2029, Jeb Dunnuck, Aug 2019

A new estate for me, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape is nearly all Grenache (there are small amounts of other varieties) and spent 15 months in concrete tanks. Smoky black fruits, garrigue, ground pepper, and forest floor notes all emerge from this rich, medium to full-bodied effort that has solid depth of fruit, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming decade.

There are just 8,000 bottles of the stellar 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape from the brother-and-sister team of Frédéric and Caroline Charrier. Mainly sourced from the sandy portions of la Crau (sud), Cristia, la Guigasse, la Pointu and Saint-Georges, this is almost all Grenache, with a sprinkling of other permitted varieties, matured in concrete. Rose petals mark the nose, paired with raspberries and cassis. It's full-bodied, yet airy, delicate and silky at the same time, with the flavors flowing easily across the palate and into a long, spice-accented finish.

Domaine Font de Courtedune

Domaine Font de Courtedune – for now, at least – is something of an insider’s secret. With vineyards right next door to Ch. Rayas, and sharing the same sandy soils, this tiny Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate produces outstanding wines that are a fraction of the price of those of its famous neighbour.
