SP68 is named after a road. 70% Frappato, 30% Nero d’Avola grown 280 m above the sea level on medium density red sands and chalk from sub-Apennine limestone rocks. Organic viticulture (although no mention of certification on the bottle). 15-year-old vines. Harvested last week of September, first ten days of October. Fermented with indigenous yeasts only, 15 days of maceration on the skins, six months in concrete vats, one month in bottle, unfiltered. Deep, glowing ruby, clear to the bottom of the glass. Cellar cool, this is pure deliciousness. Crunchy red-cherry fruit, pepper scented through the fruit, bright and sappy with a cheeky lift. Flowers drifting on the liquorice-lace finish. The kind of wine that makes me happy with every sip. (TC)

The 2017 SP68 is a terrific rendition of this special wine. This was not an easy growing season, but Arianna Occhipinti has harnessed the scorching heat to produce an elegantly open and accessible wine. The wine offers immediate tones of black fruit, dried cherry, black licorice and tar. Those aromas are focused, bright and united. This wine evidently does well in warm vintages like this and 2015. Bold sweet cherry appears on the close.
