The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a more introverted bouquet of darker fruit than its peers (a touch of stems here?); well-defined, but it clearly needs more time. The palate is well balanced with strict tannins that frame the tensile dark berry fruit, oyster shells and spice box flavors. Very harmonious toward the finish, displaying admirable precision. The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru is matured with 60% whole clusters. It has a clean, precise bouquet of black cherry, bilberry, minerals and a touch of pressed iris, much better than the two Village Crus from d’Eugénie. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, a fine bead of acidity, gentle grip and a slight lactic note toward the finish. It is not a deep or powerful Aux Brûlées but it feels persistent and has a silky-smooth texture. Give it four to six years in bottle.
Aromas of ripe cherries, sweet spices and a generous application of new oak introduce the 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Brûlées, a medium to full-bodied wine that's ample, gourmand and fleshy, with supple tannins, a generous core of fruit and an expansive, lavish profile. While this is true to the character of the climat, it was also the flashiest, most overtly oaky wine in the cellar when I tasted it.
