Punteggio 87/100 · Da bere 2020-2027, Neal Martin, Oct 2019

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has an attractive bouquet with raspberry coulis and light wild strawberry aromas that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, slightly tough in terms of texture but with decent brambly red fruit tinged with iodine on the finish. Fine. Tasted at the Domaine.

Aromas of sweet red berries, incense and spicy new oak introduce the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Village, a medium-bodied, ample wine with an open-knit but youthfully chewy framing of tannin, tangy acids and a chalky finish. With less flesh on its bones, this is showing its wood tannin more prominently than the higher appellations this year, but with a bit of bottle age it should round out. It's one cuvée, however, where a little less new wood might work well, without distorting the house style.

Light, easy nose. Something a little lolly about the fruit. Slightly bitter on the end. (JR)

(tasted from cuve ): Good dark red. Lovely red cherry and raspberry aromas are lifted by floral and spicy high notes. Juicy and firmly built, offering noteworthy finesse of texture. Not a fleshy wine but boasts excellent acidity and inner-mouth tension without any hardness. Finishes with very good lift and pungency. Should make a very successful village wine. Only the estate's vines in their parcel in Les Crais were affected by frost.
