Tasted blind. Another very sweet wine – perhaps too sweet. Needs just a little more freshness? Just the wrong side of sickly. (JR)
Continuing a run of strong vintages at Lafleur-Petrus, this has finesse and elegance alongside its muscular, powerful tannins. Think smoked blueberries, cloves and chocolate-dipped raspberries, concentrated and confident, opening to black truffles and campfire smoke. Pomerol signature in spades.
The 2018 La Fleur-Pétrus has a wonderful bouquet that exceeds my expectations, featuring black-truffle-infused black fruit and those juniper berries I noticed out of barrel, all beautifully defined and seeming to blossom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. There is a slightly granular texture on the entry, matched with a fine bead of acidity. Very harmonious. A pinch of salted licorice appears toward the finish, which might lag behind both Trotanoy and Hosanna in terms of complexity, but delivers impressive persistence.

Château La Fleur-Pétrus was the first acquisition of many in Pomerol by Jean Pierre Moueix, who went on to own Château Trotanoy, Château Hosanna and most notably Pétrus. Jean Pierre Moueix was born in Corèzze in moved to Saint-Émilion with his parent in 1929 following the Great Depression.
