Punteggio 97/100 · Da bere 2026-2036, Jeb Dunnuck, May 2024

The 2018 Château Péby Faugères is another sensational wine from this team. As always, it's all Merlot and was brought up in 65% new oak, offering a dense purple hue as well as a mammoth-sized personality. Red and black fruits, new leather, dried herbs, leather, tobacco, and chalky minerality all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, powerful mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and a great, great finish. It's one of those rare wines that brings incredible richness and depth while also holding onto remarkable purity, no sensation of weight or heaviness, and beautiful balance. It's not for the old school traditionalists out there given its ripeness level, but wow, what a wine. Give bottles another couple of years and enjoy over the following two decades.

Tasted blind. Ripe blackcurrants on the nose. Tannins well managed in this, very Cabernet-ish wine. I could almost take it for a top Chilean! Don Melchor? (Though doubtless that comment would not be well received in St-Émilion). Interesting, distinctive wine with decent balance for the long term. (JR)

The 2018 Peby-Faugeres has a gorgeous bouquet of opulent boysenberry, maraschino cherry, fig and violets scents, almost identical to what I observed in barrel. Thankfully, it has retained the delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, sweet and candied yet poised. Slightly granular in texture, it delivers a surfeit of black cherry and cassis toward the finish, along with fine mineralité . Unquestionably the best Peby-Faugeres that I have tasted. Outstanding.
