Very dark crimson. Archetypal Barossa Shiraz again. Warm minerals and leather plus chocolate plus life. On the nose I thought this might be a bit of a dead fruit wine, but I’m impressed by the life and lusciousness on the palate. Binder described it to me as 'a bit slippery' and I can see what he means. Reverberates on the palate. Tannins quite firm. (JR)

The 2002 Shiraz Heysen is produced from a 34-year-old, dry-farmed vineyard that yielded two tons of fruit per acre. Aged 20 months in American and French oak (30% new), this deep ruby/purple-hued, tightly-knit effort reveals an intriguing, distinctive nose of spice box and flowers. It possesses admirably intense flavors of flowers and blackberries, multiple layers, full body, and firm tannin. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring, and enjoy it over the following 12-15. Good ruby-red. Knockout nose combines black raspberry, strawberry, licorice, black pepper, chocolate and cinnamon, along with an intriguing minerality. Dense and thick but fresh, with a sappy, saline quality giving grip to the sweet, fleshy fla vors of raspberry, chocolate, eucalyptus, charred oak and exotic spices. Finishes peppery and very long, with sweet, fine tannins. Impressive.
