Some vegy quality on the nose and rather obvious oak on the palate. Not nearly resolved. Rather grainy texture on the end. (JR)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 1er Cru, which is entirely de-stemmed, has a taut, strict bouquet of black rather than red fruit along with crushed rock, almost flinty in style. The palate is sappy on the entry with slightly chalky tannin. There is plenty of tightly wound, marine-infused, briny black fruit here, although like the La Justice, I am seeking more charm to come through on the finish. Not bad, but I have preferred other vintages in the past.
