The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru has an earthy mulchy bouquet with more red fruit than Lignier’s Chaffots, moderate definition although it needs a little more vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite saline in the mouth but it feels clipped and lacks the persistence of its peers. Hopefully it will broaden out and gain more flesh with bottle age. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

A bit reduced (unusual). Good fragrant fruit on the palate with flattering in spades. Then a decidedly pinched on the end. Not showing well today. (JR)
("almost a normal year here," noted winemaker Frédérique Bachotet, with production off by only 20%): Bright medium red. Totally different on the nose than the preceding wines from Gevrey-Chambertin, showing a slightly reduced quality to its aromas of raspberry, smoke, iron, spices and earth and a bit less fruity/floral lift. Silky on entry, then a bit rougher in texture in the middle palate. Solid but a touch rustic, not showing the concentration or sweetness of the Gevreys; I wanted a bit more fruit. Finishes with serious tannins.
