Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2025-2038, Neal Martin, Oct 2019

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux 1er Cru, which Frédérique mentioned was protected from any frost by the surrounding wall, has a tightly wound bouquet, quite well defined but clearly closing up shop after bottling. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin and good weight in the mouth. The finish feels a little blocky and austere with tobacco lingering on the aftertaste. Difficult to see where this Les Corbeaux is going to end up. Tasted at the Domaine.

From bottle, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux exhibits aromas of ripe cherries, candied peel, baking chocolate and toasty new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a deep core of cool and concentrated fruit, fine framing tannins and a long, pure finish. A definite success, it will reward bottle age.

Rich and winning – transparent and rather charming though with a hint of creamy coffee (an oak effect?). (JR)

Bright, dark red. A touch of gamey reduction to the aromas of blueberry, blackberry, violet and licorice; showing less new oak on the nose than most of these 2016s. Densely packed and suave on entry, then quite tightly wound in the middle palate, showing less early sweetness and a juicier quality than the old-vines Gevrey. This distinctly masculine wine is a bit youthfully severe, with its very firm tannins reaching the front teeth. But I suspect it will benefit from the de-gassing effect of a racking.
