Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2026, Jeb Dunnuck, Feb 2020

I loved the 2011 Fracture on release and it has evolved nicely, with a touch of Hermitage-like minerality as well as complex notes of smoked game, wildflowers, licorice, and roasted herbs. Now fully mature on the palate, it has a medium to full-bodied, seamless texture, beautiful balance, and just an all-around classy, elegant style. It’s lost its exuberant baby fat and doesn’t quite have the length I remember on release, yet it’s a classy, beautiful wine from this terrific estate.

(100% syrah and 15% alcohol, the highest in the Booker set this vintage): Inky purple. Pungent, smoke-accented aromas of black raspberry, olive tapenade and floral oils. Very syrah. Lush and complex on the palate, offering potent flavors of cherry-cola, blackberry, violet pastille and star anise. Rich but surprisingly lively syrah, with powerful closing punch and gently chewy, harmonious tannins.

Up there with the best of the vintage, the 2011 The Fracture is ethereal stuff that’s made with the goal to be the most ready to drink of the lineup. I’m not sure if that goal is met or not, but I can say the wine is utterly brilliant. Seeing only 5-10% stem inclusion, it delivers rocking aromas of cassis, black raspberry, hints of roasted herbs, licorice and chocolate that give way to a medium to full-bodied, seamless and textured effort that has both elegance and deep, layered fruit and richness. Hard to resist and a joy to drink, it nevertheless has the balance and depth to evolve gracefully through 2021. Drink 2015-2021. Known for producing decadently rich and textured wines, proprietor Eric Jenson continues to show his winemaking skill and talent with these distinctly fresh, focused 2011s (his 2010s were also in the same ball park stylistically). All of the wines reviewed here are brilliant and this estate has quickly become one of the reference points for Paso Robles. Don’t miss these wines! While most of Eric’s wines are ready to go on release, these 2011s will all benefit from short-term cellaring. Tel. (805) 237-7367; www.bookerwines.com

The 2011 Fracture, 100% Syrah, is one of the deepest and richest of these 2011s. A plush, highly expressive mid-palate opens to reveal layers of dark fruit, leather, licorice and melted road tar. The 2011 is endowed with considerable aromatic depth and pure richness. Eric Jensen aged the 2011 in Hermitage and Francois Freres barrels, 50% new.
