Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2019-2029, Jeb Dunnuck, Feb 2019

Tasted on multiple occasions, the 2016 Château Clos Margalaine comes from a vineyard located between Le Tertre and Monbrison, in deep, gravelly soils. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot brought up in one-third new oak, it has a pretty, elegant style with sappy red and purple fruits, mint, and green herbs all emerging from the glass. Fresh, nicely focused, with some firm tannins, give it a few years and enjoy it over the following decade or so.

The 2016 Clos Margalaine has an attractive bouquet of black cherries, mocha and hints of dark chocolate that gradually unfold in the glass. The palate is a little chewy on the entry and grippy in the mouth, with a compact second half that, as I observed from barrel, just lacks a bit of stuffing.

This has quite ripe raspberries and boysenberries with good polish and balance to the palate. Long, supple and attractive with a fluid and attractive core of long, super plush and ripe fruit. Succulent finish here. Try from 2022.

The 2016 Clos Margalaine is laced with the essence of raspberry jam, blood orange, white chocolate and sweet spices. Opulent to the core, Clos Margalaine shows the racier side of Margaux off to great effect. An attractive floral note perks up the finish. I would prefer to drink this supple, fruity Margaux over the next handful of years. The 2016 is quite expressive in the early going. Tasted two times.
