Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2024-2032, Josh Raynolds, Dec 2021

Inky ruby. Fresh boysenberry, candied violet and a hint of vanilla on the intensely perfumed nose. Shows very good depth as well as energy to its juicy, spice-laced black and blue fruit flavors, which pick up a smoky nuance as the wine opens up. Silky, even tannins lend shape to a long, smooth finish that leaves blue fruit and floral notes behind.

The 2016 Shiraz Bin 128 is 100% Coonawarra Shiraz, and it’s more fresh, focused, and elegant than the pleasure bent Bin 28. Notes of black raspberries, peppery herbs, mint, and graphite all emerge from this medium to full-bodied Shiraz that stays tight and focused on the palate, yet has good concentration, terrific purity of fruit, and a great finish. It needs 2-4 years of bottle age and will cruise for another decade after that. It’s a classy Shiraz that over-delivers.

Sourced exclusively from Coonawarra, the 2016 Bin 128 Shiraz is one of the few truly regional bottlings you'll find from Penfolds. It's red-fruited and bright, with raspberries and cherries couched in supple layers of French oak. Caramel and mocha shadings add richness and depth, with dry cedary-savory notes on the finish.

Treasury Wine Estates have spent millions on Cab vineyards, massive replanting with better plant material and moving away from minimal pruning. Penfolds buy some Wynns fruit. Rainfall in Coonawarra was significantly below the long-term average for the entire growing season, while above-average temperatures prevailed. Budburst, flowering, veraison and harvest were all earlier than is usually expected of this relatively cool region. 12 months in French oak (30% new), a mix of ages and sizes of oak. TA 6.6 g/l, pH 3.64. Intense and ripe. Pinched finish and tough end. Prune flavour. Sudden finish though. (JR)
