Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2021-2030, Neal Martin, Sep 2021

The 2001 Château d’Aiguilhe, matured 70% new oak, is cut from a different cloth than the 2000. On the plusher, opulent nose, there’s more red fruit, blood orange and dried figs; some damson emerges in the glass, seeming somehow melted in quality. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and a keen thread of acidity. Fresh and vibrant, with a granular, soy-tinged finish, this deserves a round of applause after 20 years.

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2001 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color to the rim as well as a sumptuous bouquet of spice box, licorice, black currants, and loamy, earthy characteristics. Made in a suave, savory style, with medium body, sweet tannin, ripe fruit, and loads of balance as well as elegance, this beauty will drink well for 10+ years. It is a sleeper of the vintage. This large estate is owned by Stephan von Neipperg, who hired guru winemaking consultant Stephane Derenoncourt to make the wine.

Bright, deep ruby-red. High-pitched aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate and shoe polish, with a slightly rustic animal element. Rich, fat and dry, with flavors of dark berries, dark chocolate and violet nicely firmed by ripe acidity. Offers a finer texture but less power than the 2000. Finishes with sweet, fine, slowly mounting tannins and an impression of classic dryness.
