The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is another Burgundian-styled wine from the team here. Black cherries, peppery herbs, dried herbs, and some savory spice notes all emerge from the glass, and it's medium to full-bodied, silky and pure on the palate. It's certainly in the new style of the estate, yet has depth, richness, and plenty of length. It's going to drink nicely for 10-15 years. Unquestionably, some of my favorite wines in the world come from the estate of Sylvie Vacheron, who has the incredibly talented Bruno Gaspard as well as consultant Philippe Cambie at the helm in the vineyards and cellars. Located in the eastern region of the appellation, south of Beaucastel, and covering a tiny 25 acres, they produce a bevy of Côtes du Rhônes as well as a similar lineup of Châteauneuf-du-Papes. I would classify these wines as quasi-modern as the wines are mostly destemmed, and they do utilize newer demi-muids, yet these are pure, classic Southern Rhône wines that are simply loaded with character. In addition, while the style has undeniably changed to one of more elegance and finesse, these latest 2016s and 2017s pack serious oomph and power.

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Caillou is the property's new entry-level Châteauneuf-du-Pape, comprised of 50% estate-grown wine and 50% purchased wine. It's 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, and it shows admirable purity. Cherry and raspberry notes are accented by hints of dried spices and orange zest. It's full-bodied and open-knit, with a soft, dusty finish.

95% Grenache, 2% Mourvèdre, 2% Syrah, 1% Cinsault. Strong medicinal notes that threaten to overwhelm the fruit. On the nose, the fruit lacks definition and there is an odd bitter coffee taste to finish. (RH)
