The base cuvée from this estate always delivers, and the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is no exception. Based on a 70/30 split of Grenache and Mourvèdre, it boasts a deep purple color as well as a rocking nose of blackberries, blackcurrants, toasted spices, and peppered meats. This puppy is jam-packed with fruit, is full-bodied, has ripe tannin, and is just a smoking good Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape falls short of the beautiful 2015 version, but it is still excellent. A 70-30 blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre raised in concrete, it offers aromas of dark, dried fruit and cola, layered with a hint of horse blanket. Full-bodied, chewy and tannic, this old-school offering will need a few years to soften.
Bright ruby-red. Fragrant raspberry, boysenberry and garrigue scents show good clarity and pick up a floral quality with air. Lively red and dark berry flavors caress the palate and slowly put on weight with air. Candied lavender and spicecake notes linger on a smooth, subtly tannic, nicely persistent finish that echoes the red fruit note.
