The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru is endowed with slightly darker fruit than its peers, hints of black tea and iodine complementing the blackberry and mulberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, quite succulent in the mouth. Perhaps the finish is missing the same degree of terroir expression of its peers, it expresses more the winemaking style. Still, it is an attractive wine, albeit not a cerebral one. (Hudelot-Noëllat owns two parcels, one 30 and the other 70 years of age): Medium bright red. Aromas of black raspberry and licorice are given punch by pungent rocky minerality. Concentrated but still quite tight and wound up; this wine too is carrying a high level of CO2. The tannins are fine-grained but distinctly firm in the early going. Finishes subtle, savory and long but I find this wine difficult to assess with confidence today.
