Tasted blind. Deep ruby colour. Medicinal, smoky oak. Very gamey and meaty on the nose – the fruit is somewhat hidden. The palate is likewise dominated by tar and spice. There is some middle but it is one of fruit skins. Lacking the flesh for the lashings of oak that drive the finish. (TP)

Deep ruby/purple-colored, the 2017 Chateau La Couspaude is based on 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon. It offers an attractive bouquet of ripe black cherries, red plums, scorched earth, and earth, with a touch of smoky oak in the background. Medium-bodied, nicely textured, and elegant on the palate, it shows the fresher, mid-weight style of the vintage yet has a supple, charming, already delicious style. Drink it over the coming decade or so.
Dark cherry colour. Sweetly spiced, almost a touch of nutmeg. Smooth, supple and harmonious. Firm but rounded. Correct. (JH)
