2017 Balestard la Tonnelle

Deep smudgy crimson. Sweet Merlot fruit is a surprise after some rather dry Pessacs tasted earlier this morning. Almost a touch overripe on the nose. Juicy, fruity, 'New World' in style apart from the dryish tannins on the finish. (JH)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Balestard la Tonnelle gives up crushed cherries, wild blueberries and violets on the nose with chocolate box and anise nuances. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a great core of pure, spice-accented black fruits, supported by grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long.

The 2017 Balestard de Tonnelle has an impressive bouquet: quite intense but not over-powering with scents of blackberry, boysenberry and a touch of iodine all well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, nicely integrated oak with a svelte finish that is really quite classy. You know, this is the best Balestard de Tonnelle that I have tasted in recent years. Excellent.
