Punteggio 16/20 · Da bere 2026-2039, Tom Parker MW, jancisrobinson.com, Sep 2021

Tasted blind. Deep ruby colour. On the nose, highly toasted oak currently dominates the aromatic profile. Underneath, blueberry and red-cherry fruit. This fruit puts up more of a fight on the palate, and may yet win the battle, but the highly spiced, clovey oak sits heavily for now. The finish is long as both elements of this wine fight to win out. (TP)

The 2017 Le Gay is a dense, dark and powerful wine, with real potential. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, new oak, spice, violet and menthol infuse the 2017 with layers of dimension. Le Gay marries intensity, richness and energy so well. The style is decidedly full-throttle, but all the elements come together well. Readers should expect a potent, heady Pomerol.

Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2020-2032, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate, Mar 2020

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Le Gay offers a very serious, classic notes of plum preserves, mulberries and baked black cherries with hints of tilled soil, cloves, cedar chest and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has firm, grippy tannins and plenty of muscular fruit, finishing on a stewed tea note.

The 2017 Le Gay has a slightly savory bouquet, hints of meat juice infusing the brambly red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, notes of tea leaf, blackberry and raspberry with a slightly hard finish that should soften with bottle age. It is more austere than expected although that can often be the case with the property. A serious Pomerol that will require some bottle age...I just wish it was less "serious"!

Chateau Le Gay

There’s been lots of change at Ch. le Gay since the Parent family arrived in 2002 – with vineyards replanted, the cellars renovated and the winemaking adjusted. No surprise, perhaps, that quality is now higher than ever.
