Deep straw. Utterly correct – and actually more interesting than most, with hints of elderflower as well as the lime, oak and oil notes that characterise Pessac-Léognan Blanc. (JR)

65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot. Deep crimson. Leafily fragrant with dark fruit and pencil shavings. Fine and quite dry on the palate, not a huge amount of flesh in the middle and a little bit lean on the finish but the whole has retained reasonable harmony in a light style. (JH)
Deep crimson. Black cherry and a hint of menthol. Powder-fine tannins are well managed so as not to dominate the fruit, which is a bit light in the middle. Just a bit abrupt. (JH)
The 2017 Château Picque Caillou is another elegant, medium-bodied wine. Kirsch, black cherries, dried herbs, and lots of spice and cedar notes give way to a nicely textured, mid-weight, yet balanced Graves that shines for its complexity. Although not profound and deep, it should keep for 8-10 years.

Neighbouring Haut-Brion and Pape Clément, this estate has been turned around since Paulin Calvet took over in 2007. Working with the legendary late Denis Dubourdieu and Valérie Lavigne, results have been impressive.
