Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2025-2040, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Feb 2022

A lighter-framed Bouscaut in reflection of the vintage conditions. There are still plenty of the espresso, tar and bitter chocolate flavours that are so signature to Bouscaut, coupled with fragrant floral and fruit notes, overall a little short on the finish but deft winemaking on display. Harvest September 21 to October 3, 40% new oak for ageing. Frost early in the season meant yields were 40% down on average.

Diam closure. Tasted blind. Pale, green-tinged yellow colour. Strongly Sauvignon in character – asparagus, tangy grapefruit and a hint of lambswool. Fairly soft and medium bodied, ahead of a hit of moderate but tangy acidity. Clean, savoury and lightly creamy. Green fruit, grapefruit and a hit of sweet spice from oak on the finish. Clean, fresh style. (TP)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Bouscaut has an oaky nose with plum preserves, baked blackberries, earth and bay leaves aromas plus a waft of smoked meats. The medium-bodied palate is firm and chewy with a good core of rugged fruit and a grippy finish.

The 2017 Bouscaut does not quite reveal the same precision and detail on the nose as some of its peers, though it does improve with aeration showing humidor and espresso. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins and supple in texture. An understated, pliant finish renders this quite approachable. Drink over the next 5 to 7 years.
