A terrific effort in a less acclaimed vintage, the 2017 Haut-Marbuzet reveals aromas of sweet cassis, pencil shavings and forest floor, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy palate. With good depth at the core and sweet, powdery structuring tannins, it's a charming, characterful wine that will offer a broad drinking window. Readers might think of it as a modern-day version of the estate's delicious 1999.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby. Earthy cabernet fruit on the nose. Quite meaty, compact and grippy. Medium weight, with a touch of warming alcohol, but there is blackcurrant and cool cherry here too. Quite a leathery, savoury finish. (TP)
The 2017 Haut-Marbuzet is racy and enticing, just as it was en primeur. Ripe red cherry fruit, blood orange, rose petal, anise and mint give the 2017 its distinctive personality. As it often is, Haut-Marbuzet is a bit eccentric, especially in its slightly oxidative aromatic personality, and yet it has so much character.
