The 2017 La Croix du Casse, picked from 29 September, has a pretty bouquet with red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit laced with black truffle, and an irony component emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. It needs a little more cohesion although, there is a pleasant touch of balsamic towards the finish. Fine early drinking Pomerol.

The 2017 La Croix de Casse was 70% affected by the frost. It has a simple and I have to say, slightly monotone bouquet that does not get both hands on “Pomerol”, a little too generic in style. That said, a second tasting towards the end of my visits evinced a Pomerol with a little more edge and bite. The palate is actually better with sappy red berry fruit, a fine bead of acidity and pleasing fleshy, lightly spiced red fruit towards the finish. Not bad, but I have tasted better vintages of this wine.
The 2017 La Croix du Casse is soft, fruity and accessible, all of which make it a good choice for drinking now and over the near and medium term. Cedar, tobacco, mint and dried cherry are laced into the soft, pliant finish. Yields are down a punishing 50%.
