Black tea, cassis, rosebud, chalk, mineral, gentle citrus fruit, sweet oak impact on the finish, good quality. Both Cabernet Franc and Merlot were impacted by frost - which at the time was the first real frost since 1991 at Cantemerle, making final yields 40hl/h. 40% new oak for ageing, Eric Boissenot consultant, Philippe Dambrine estate director.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby colour. Very toasty oak brings coconut and exotic spice to the nose, somewhat masking the fruit. Cedary barrel notes continue to lead the flavour on the palate. The texture is appealing – bright in acid and fine in tannin – but it is very hard to get past the sweetness of barrel against cool fruit at present. Hopefully this will integrate in time. (TP)

A real sleeper, the 2017 Cantemerle has turned out beautifully. Cedar, sweet tobacco, menthol, licorice and incense add pretty aromatic top notes in this super-refined Haut-Médoc. More than anything else, the 2017 stands out for its exceptional balance and alluring personality. This is a terrific showing.
