A fantastic value wine from these old vine Shiraz specialists. A large proportion of the vines are situated on limestone soil giving the wine great natural acidity and freshness on the palate. The wine has a complex aroma of fresh fruit (blackberry, red cherry) and savoury aromas of olives and tar. The palate has great density of fleshy fruit, well balanced with vibrant acidity and taut etched tannins.

The entry-level Shiraz is the 2016 Shiraz Barossa Valley, and it’s a terrific value. Sporting a deep, inky color as well as a great nose of jammy blackberries, bacon fat, barbecue smoke, and peppery spice, it’s fleshy and opulent on the palate yet has notable restraint, purity, and elegance. Drink this medium to full-bodied, balanced, high-quality Shiraz anytime over the coming 4-6 years.
In case you thought the Powells were only making tiny quantities of unaffordable wines, the 2016 Barossa Valley Shiraz retails for a reasonable $30 per bottle. From mostly 20- to 30-year-old vines in Marananga, it's aged in foudre. It's medium to full-bodied, with tar and black olive notes on opening that blossom into cherry and blueberry fruit after decanting. The tannins are fine, lingering on the silky finish.
