Punteggio 88/100 · Neal Martin, Oct 2019

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru shows quite a lot of VA on the nose. There is a jammy quality to the aromatics that occludes the terroir expression. The palate is sweet and rather cloying, quite Mediterranean in style with a touch of black olive compote on the finish. Just picked too late? Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2016 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint Jacques includes 35% whole bunch fruit and matured in 40% new oak for 17 months. It has a tightly wound bouquet with dark berry fruit, a touch of damp soil and dried blood with good vigor all around. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly sharp tannin and plenty of sour cherry and strawberry fruit, but it falls short on the finish. Hopefully this will find more matière with time.

Fragrant, impressive lift on the palate with violet and black cherry flavours, and a lovely twist of cinnamon too. Firm palate, but by no means aggressive. Full body and long, concentrated finish. (RH)

This is also perfumed and exceptionally pretty with its broad ranging nose of both red and dark berry fruit, the sauvage, floral and soft wisps of earth and spice. There is excellent mid-palate fat and volume that imparts a succulent mouthfeel to the powerful and muscular flavors where the minerality really comes up on the moderately austere, firmly structured and ever-so-slightly rustic finish. This is built-to-age and will need it.
