(13.5% alcohol; three barrels made; by the time of my visit, the single new barrel had been racked into an older one): Good dark red. Nose dominated by animal reduction. Then wonderfully silky and fine-grained on the palate, albeit with slightly reduced flavors of black fruits and menthol. Not yet showing much finesse--in fact, the back end is a bit clenched--but the tannins are quite suave. In an awkward stage today but holds out serious potential.

The 2016 Mazoyeres Chambertin Grand Cru was completely destemmed. It has an outstanding bouquet with detailed blackberry, raspberry, cold stone and subtle damp undergrowth aromas—very complex and it seems to gain intensity with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine, supple tannin that make this Mazoyères less oppressive than it might have been. There is a confit-like finish that lingers long in the mouth and you are already yearning for the next sip (always a positive sign). Give this several years aging to fully melt the tannins, then you will have a superb grand cru on your hands.
Three pièces of which one was new. Not racked. Bright crimson. Much more muted than the Échezeaux just tasted. Good texture on the palate. Really comes up to the plate on the end. Excellent texture. Fine tannins. (JR)
