Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2021-2040, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Jan 2019

From bottle, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is showing beautifully, offering up a youthful but expressive bouquet of dark wild berries, currant leaf, coniferous forest floor and subtle hints of peony. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny with a generous core of cool, sappy fruit, melting tannins and a beautifully defined finish. It's a beautifully complete, elegant Estournelles Saint-Jacques that confirms its terrific performance from barrel. While it's sufficiently supple to be approachable now, a decade of patience will be rewarded by considerably greater complexity.

Bright, full red. Less floral and high-pitched on the nose than the Lavaux Saint-Jacques, and not currently showing that wine's crushed-stone minerality. In a more medicinal, muscular style, conveying a strong impression of punch but not the delicacy or detail of the Lavaux. Rich and filled in but more about savory minerality and soil tones than flowers and spices. It's possible that this sample was drawn from a less-fresh barrel; I look forward to following up on this wine from bottle next year.

Cask sample. 15 months in French oak. Mid cherry. Sweet, ripe and fresh dark fruit. Already revealing some of its perfume, riper than many. On the palate, some oak sweetness, which seems somehow to flatten the fruit on the palate. Maybe it is just embryonic but that oak is a dampener at the moment. Yet oak and fruit persist side by side to the finish. (JH)

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques has a fragrant, floral bouquet with pressed white flowers complementing the red berry fruit, a touch of graphite emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin, darker fruit than the nose implies but with pleasing roundness and fleshiness toward the finish. Probably one of Jadot's more approachable Gevrey premier crus. Dec 2017, www.robertparker.com
