The 2015 Kraehe Shiraz is a wine in stasis; it is aging slowly, albeit with mineral grace and poise. The fruit is intense, make no mistake, but it exerts a sense of balance and harmony over the palate and drags out through the long finish. This speaks of Marananga, it speaks of Shiraz and it speaks of Dave Powell too. It's a beautiful thing, this wine, and it has a long future in front of it, as all of these wines do. It's built for aging. And the 2015s are looking magnificent in 2024. The oak is charry and evident, but it works so well with the fruit. 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

110-year-old vines, mainly heavy red clay over limestone. 18 months in new French oak. 200 cases of 12. Smells completely different from the Steinert Flaxman. This is richer and riper on the nose and it tastes sweeter and more velvety. Rounded and sweet on the finish. Full and chewy in the mouth, texture is thicker and less dry – needs a little longer to slim down. (JH)
From a tiny, one hectare, 110-year-old vineyard in Barossa Valley’s Marananga subregion, the 2015 Kraehe Shiraz (pronounced kray) has a deep garnet-purple color and profoundly scented nose of blackberry and blueberry preserves, dried plums and mulberries with salami and fertile earth undertones, plus hints of marmite toast, asphalt and licorice. The full-bodied palate packs in the flavor layers with the voluptuous fruit superbly framed by firm, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with epic length.
