Another saturated ruby/purple effort from Fronsac, the 2016 Château Barrabaque Prestige (80% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon) gives up loads of spiced cherry and blackberry fruits, some dried earth and cedary notes, medium to full body, a rounded, supple, layered texture and sweet tannins. A beautiful wine that fills the mouth with fruit, it has no hard edges and displays terrific overall balance. Drink it over the coming decade or more.

The 2016 Cuvée Prestige from Château Barrabaque has a concentrated, dense bouquet with layers of black cherries, boysenberry jam and a light cherry confit note. It is nicely defined and quite "in yer face." The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannin, a little sinewy, and yet it pulls it all off by retaining impressive balance and focus. Look out for this superb Canon Fronsac.
A juicy and savory young red with dark-berry and brick character. Medium body, medium tannins and a fresh finish. A blend of 80 per cent merlot, 18 per cent cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc and two per cent malbec. Drink after 2021.
Slightly one-dimensional Bordeaux, but it shows a pretty fruit profile of blackcurrants and plums. Medium body, light tannins and tangy acidity. Wait and see. Mar 17, www.jamessuckling.com
