Earthy nose that has a wealth of classic bordelais character: smoke, graphite, cedar and lots of core blackcurrant fruit. Youthful length that needs lots of age to fully open. A great-value Pomerol. GV (RH)

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc from gravel, clay, and iron-rich soils, the 2016 Château Bourgneuf offers a medium-bodied, earthy style as well as moderate tannins, good concentration, and a firm, focused finish. Giving up notes of darker fruits, cedary herbs, and damp earth, it will be interesting to see if this fills out with short-term cellaring. At the moment, it's a rather firm and foursquare yet balanced effort. Hold off for 2-3 years, and it should keep for a decade or more.
The 2016 Bourgneuf needs a lot of coaxing from the glass, eventually offering blackberry, briar and light cedar aromas. The medium-bodied palate displays grainy tannins and gentle grip. There is plenty of freshness and vitality here, the 15% Cabernet Franc lending a little spice toward the persistent finish. This is one of the best Bourgneuf wines I have encountered in recent years.
Very plush and attractive tannin texture and a wealth of rich dark plums and berries, make this an attractive wine for the vintage. Great focus and balance. Try from 2022.
