Punteggio 86/100 · Da bere 2020-2025, Neal Martin, Aug 2020

The 2016 Haut-Bergey Blanc has a showy and rather monotone nose featuring peach, apricot and mango notes, bizarrely akin to a Chardonnay. The palate is rounded on the entry. Quite a “worked” phenolic dry white Bordeaux, showing tropical tones and a sense of fatness toward the finish. It feels a little uncouth compared to its peers. Not bad, just rather anonymous. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Very pretty lemon-curd, pineapple and cooked-pear character on the nose and palate. Medium to full body. Soft, velvety texture and a flavorful finish. Drink now.

This estate produced two beautiful wines in the vintage. The medium-gold colored 2016 Château Haut-Bergey Blanc is an outstanding white from the Graves region that offers a honeyed, melon, pineapple, and floral array to go with a medium-bodied, ripe, rounded style on the palate. I don’t think it’s going to make old bones, but it’s undeniably delicious.

The 2016 Haut-Bergey Blanc offers notable richness and plenty of up-front appeal. Pineapple, mango and a host of exotic floral notes give this suave, layered white its distinctive personality. Drink it over the next few years.

Haut Bergey

Since Paul Garcin took over running this estate in 2014, it has become one of Pessac-Léognan’s most exciting addresses. Biodynamic and with a minimalist approach, Ch. Haut-Bergey makes pure and expressive wines that offer both great value and a taste of the modern Bordeaux.
