Punteggio 93/100 · Jeb Dunnuck, Feb 2019

More elegant than the 2015, the 2016 Domaine de Cambes comes from the Mitjavile family of Tertre Rôteboeuf and is an 80/20 split of Merlot and Cabernet Franc brought up in new oak. It offers a layered, seamless texture as well as notes of caramelized blackberry and blueberry fruits, toasted bread, classy oak, and spice. Beautiful on all accounts, with medium to full body and a great mid-palate as well as sweet tannins, it’s a sensational wine from this unheralded appellation that deserves attention.

The 2016 Domaine des Cambes, made by François Mitjavile of Tertre-Rôteboeuf, has a pure, cassis - and blueberry-scented bouquet that reveals top notes of crushed violet petals and even a hint of ink. The palate is silky-smooth with fine tannin and lightly spiced with a dash of white pepper. The cohesive backbone is deeply impressive. Gentle but insistent in terms of grip, leading to a very fresh finish. This Domaine des Cambes really is superb, and it will offer much drinking pleasure over the next decade.

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Just across the Gironde from Issan, from the flat land at the base of the slope of Roc de Cambes. Lively and sweet and with lots of richness and energy. Amazingly good for an AOC Bordeaux. Luscious richness. Fantastic length. Exoticissimo. RRP €40 in France – perhaps the most expensive AOC Bordeaux? (JR)
