The 2016 Grand Mayne gives very little away on the nose, taciturn, broody dark berry fruit mixed with black tea and cedar aromas. More Left Bank in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a savoury, dried-blood-tinged entry. Fine depth, fully mature yet fresh, applying satisfying grip towards the cracked black pepper-tinged finish. Maybe give it another year. Classy. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Dark ruby. Rich, ripe, flattering nose. Suitably structured so that, although there’s a hint of sweet oak, it’s also reasonably refreshing. Good for right-bank enthusiasts. Still quite a bit of tannin on the end. (JR)
The 2016 Grand-Mayne has a refined, complex bouquet of intense red berry fruit, briar and undergrowth aromas plus wonderfully integrated oak. The palate is ripe on the entry with plush tannins, and perhaps a little more forward than its peers, yet there is plenty of charm on the lightly spiced, tertiary finish. This is Saint-Émilion with pedigree. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The Nony family has been at the helm of this 17-hectare estate for three generations, since the 1930s, but it’s under Jean-Antoine – in charge since 2015 – that quality here has soared.
