The 2016 Le Carre is blended of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and aged in 80% new French oak. Deep garnet-purple, it bursts from the glass with gregarious scents of dark chocolate-covered cherries, warm plums and blueberry compote with hints of coffee beans, menthol, yeast extract and beef drippings. Full-bodied, rich and decadent in the mouth, the palate features a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing very long and mineral laced.

From vines near Canon, on the upper plateau, the 2016 Le Carre gives up loads of ripe black fruits, tar, asphalt, and truffle notes. It's a big, fleshy, flamboyant effort that has good freshness and purity. As with the three single vineyards, it's 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that spent 18 months in 80% new French oak.
A unique wine for this appellation. Low on fruit, but lots of savory and mineral character. Concentrated, sleek and on the edge of tart, yet with so much oyster-shell character and serious, chalky tannins. Better from 2020.
