The 2013 Dos Dedos de Frente is a co-fermentation of Syrah with a small portion of Viognier à la Côte-Rôtie, fermented in open-top stainless steel and aged in well-seasoned oak French oak barrels for some 14 months after malolactic. It has a very Rhôneish nose with plenty of smoky bacon, violets and tar, spicy and exotic, open, aromatic and captivating. The palate revealed a velvety texture with sleek, fine-grained tannins and very good balance, with a rare combination of power and elegance. This comes from one single vineyard at 920 meters altitude on stony and clay soils on limestone mother rock. This is a stunning Syrah. 4,000 bottles were filled in April 2016.

97% Syrah, 3% Viognier. The vineyard is situated at 950 m and it is planted on pudding stones. Cold maceration with Syrah and Viognier fermented together. Long macerated for three weeks after fermentation and aged for 20 months in old French oak barrels. 'Dos dedos de frente' is a Spanish expression translated as 'a little piece of intelligence'. 3,300 bottles produced. Very pure and intense nose showing ripe dark fruit, cloves, clean oak and a meaty touch. Great nose. It is muscular and has a good shape, well built with fine-grained tannins, savoury and harmonious alcohol and fruit balance. It is big, fleshy and yummy. Extremely hedonistic and superb delineation. I take my hat off to this wine. (FC)
