Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2020-2038, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Jun 2017

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has a far more convincing bouquet than the village cru with more complexity in terms of fruit profile, here as much red as black, with superior mineralité and delineation. The palate is crisp and taut on the entry. This is a structured wine but with ample black dusky fruit, a little introverted in style at the moment, perhaps closing down after bottling. Yet there is a sense of coiled up energy here and I admire the precision expressed on the finish. This is worth checking out, although it needs 4-5 years before it reaches its drinking plateau. Tasted October2016.

Medium red. Deeper-pitched nose shows more game and espresso than primary fruit today. Then creamier and sweeter in the middle but also with more reserve than the basic village offering, as well as a more obvious tannic structure for mid-term aging. A wild essence of Gevrey-Chambertin: dense, tactile and nicely concentrated. Finishes with subtle game and earth notes.

(50% vendange entier ; 50% new oak): Bright red-ruby. Shows more smoky oak and less obvious fruit on the nose than the regular village offering, plus complicating notes of espresso and minerals. A step up in texture and depth, though, with the middle palate showing more energy and the dusty tannins saturating the palate on the lively finish. More powerful and ageworthy than the basic village Gevrey.

Vines are more than 60 years old but some have been replaced. Some Clos Prieur in here. Obviously very superior to the village wine. Lots of tannin but also masses of attractive floral aromas. (JR)
